We Can Weather Any Storm Together: Southwest Georgia’s 2025 Winter Wonderland

January 27, 2025

What a breathtaking week last week was for Southwest Georgia! Some areas seeing over 7 inches of snow transformed Albany into a rare, magical winter wonderland—our first significant snowfall since the Great Snowstorm of ’73. Families bundled up to make joyful memories, from building snowmen to cozying up at home.

Amidst this enchanting scene, let’s pause to express our gratitude to the dedicated individuals who worked tirelessly to keep our community safe and connected:

WALB Team – Thank you for providing real-time weather updates and helping us stay informed during this rare weather event. Your hard work ensured we could prepare and stay safe!

Albany Police Department & DOCO Sheriff’s Office – Your efforts to maintain safety on snowy roads are deeply appreciated. Thank you for your unwavering service to our community!

DOCO EMS Paramedics & EMTs – Responding to emergencies in challenging weather is no small feat. Your bravery and commitment saved lives this week.

Albany Fire Department – From countless calls to ensuring everyone stayed safe, you rose to the occasion, as always.

Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital Healthcare Workers – Your sacrifice, including staying overnight to provide care, exemplifies compassion and dedication.

Albany Utilities, Georgia Power, & Mitchell EMC Technicians – Thank you for working around the clock to keep our homes warm and powered through the storm.

On behalf of the Albany Dougherty Economic Development Commission, we extend our heartfelt appreciation to every essential worker and community member who came together during this extraordinary week.
