Celebrating Progress, Partnerships, and People: Economic Development Week 2025 in Albany-Dougherty

May 28, 2025

In Albany-Dougherty County, economic development is more than just numbers—it’s about people, partnerships, and long-term progress. During Economic Development Week 2025, the Albany-Dougherty Economic Development Commission (ADEDC) proudly spotlighted the achievements and initiatives that are shaping the region’s economic future.

Organized by the International Economic Development Council (IEDC), Economic Development Week is a national celebration of the pivotal role economic development plays in creating vibrant communities. Locally, ADEDC took this opportunity to showcase key milestones and collaborative efforts that are fueling momentum in Southwest Georgia.

Driving Growth with Meaningful Investment

In fiscal year 2025 alone, ADEDC facilitated the creation of over 100 new jobs and secured more than $18 million in capital investment across Albany-Dougherty County. These accomplishments reflect a dedicated push to support both new and expanding industries, ensuring the region remains competitive in today’s evolving economic landscape.

A standout moment this year was the celebration of the 5th anniversary of Georgia-Pacific’s Albany Lumber Mill. Since opening in 2020, the facility has become a cornerstone of local manufacturing with a $150+ million investment and 180 jobs created. ADEDC joined local leaders, including District 6 Commissioner Anthony Jones, in presenting a proclamation to Plant Manager Michael Johnson—recognizing the company's continued investment and commitment to the community.

Preparing the Workforce of Tomorrow

ADEDC’s impact extends beyond industry—it’s also about people. On May 9, the organization participated in THRIVE 2025, a collaborative workforce development initiative in partnership with the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce, Albany Technical College, and local educators.

Hosted at Albany Tech’s Kirkland Center, THRIVE 2025 welcomed students with disabilities from four area high schools for a hands-on day of career readiness training. From mock interviews and networking to a professional fashion show and inspirational talks, the event emphasized the power of inclusion in building a strong workforce.

Advocacy at the National Level

ADEDC also took part in the Albany Area Chamber’s 2025 Washington D.C. Fly-In—the largest local delegation to date. ADEDC Chair Chris Hatcher, along with other regional leaders, met with Georgia’s congressional delegation, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and various federal agencies. These conversations centered around advocating for policies that support economic development in Southwest Georgia.

Looking Ahead

“Economic development is more than attracting jobs and capital—it’s about building a thriving community,” said Jana Dyke, President & CEO of ADEDC. “From industry investments to talent development and national advocacy, we are proud of the collaborative work taking place across Albany-Dougherty.”

As ADEDC continues to champion economic progress, its mission remains focused on fostering growth through strategic partnerships, community investment, and workforce empowerment.
